Great Vibrations

Diamonds are no longer a girl’s best friend; vibrators are. And with fewer than 30 percent of women able to achieve orgasm through penetrative sex alone, it’s hardly surprising.

It all started with the 1998 Sex and the City episode when Charlotte became addicted to her vibrator. Almost overnight, sales of the Pearl Rabbit vibrator exploded. Normal women were suddenly opening up and talking about using sex toys.

Since then we’ve been hit by wave after wave of fancy, elegant, pleasure- inducing devices.

Gone are the ugly, veiny realistic vibrating cocks or ridiculous twitching pink rabbit ears. Today’s vibrators are sleek, smooth, sophisticated and sexy. And there’s no shortage of varieties to enhance your solo session – from clit-nuzzling vibrating eggs the world’s best-selling G-spot vibrator, to the all-time classic, the famous Magic Wand.

But it’s not just about masturbation. In the US, the Center for Sexual Health Promotion at Indiana University estimates 80 per cent of women have used a vibrator with a partner. So if you’re thinking of using one with your lover, why not shop online together?

There’s a lot to consider when selecting your device. So much, in fact, that many of us own a whole range, each suited to a different purpose. Use these six points to help you pick the vibrator that sends you straight to orgasmic bliss.

Size

Does size matter? In this case, yes. Some dildos and vibrators are so big they may make your partner feel a little, how shall I put this ... inadequate by comparison. And think about where you’ll use it, too. Do you want something small enough to carry in your handbag for spontaneous play? Or are you after something you can use at home?

Power

What range of settings and speeds does it have? Will this toy deliver the kind of intensity of vibration you’re after?

Volume

Often you get what you pay for: a powerful toy that’s going cheap is likely to be noisy. Will something that sounds like a jackhammer kill the moment? Will you be too scared you’ll wake the kids up to use it? Check carefully to see what noise levels the toy produces before making your purchase.

Material

What will this toy feel like? Do you want something smooth or ribbed? What’s most sexy to you – silicone, stainless steel, rubber? How about the look of the thing? Does it appear cheap and tacky or is it beautifully shaped?

Some toys, like those in the Lelo range, look like works of art that wouldn’t be out of place on your mantelpiece. If you or your partner are visual, that might matter to you. Everyone likes to feel special when they’re making love to a beautiful, high-quality toy is more likely to get you in the mood.

Hygiene

How easy is this product to clean? Is it dishwasher friendly? You want your sex toys to be fun and convenient to use before, during and after play.

Price

As I mentioned previously, some super-cheap vibrators contain potentially harmful chemicals like phthalates. And a super-cheap vibrator often vibrates the handle of the toy, giving you a nasty, totally unsexy case of dead arm. So I recommend thinking of your sex toy purchases in terms of cost-per-use. On that basis, a toy that’s so tacky you use it only once is a waste of money. But you don’t have to fork out lots of money to get something high quality. There are plenty of mid-range vibrators that offer a great experience, as you’ll soon see.

A chastity device is a device worn around the genitalia to prohibit intercourse or masturbation. Because of the large demand for them, devices for males are often more varied and available, but there are just a few chastity devices available for women. Men wear chastity cages, which make it virtually impossible to develop an erection, while women wear chastity belts, which prevent them from touching or being penetrated in any way.
